Not every reno requires a wholesale demolition. If you've got a space with good bones and some nice architectural details, it may be easier (and less expensive) to keep what's good and dress-up the rest. Love what you've got and focus on how to make it better and newer!
Many people justify expensive home renos as not only improving their living space, but as an investment that will ultimately increase the value of their home. But renovating may not be as important as market timing when it comes time to sell and realise a return on your investment. This is especially true if you live in an area where demand is greater than supply.
Home renovations shouldn't always be about ROI – especially if you plan to stay there another 8 - 10 years. If you can afford it and it brings you pleasure and enhances your lifestyle then do it! A house is a home after all, not just an investment. Watch for my editorial in the Summer issue of 'In Our Space' magazine for advice on hiring the right renovation team for the job.
While we're talking renos... plan to visit me at Ceramic Decor in Guelph May 7th, 10 am till noon, for my 'Ask a Designer' guest appearance. Bring your pics and your decor questions for a free chat in their showroom. The coffee's on us!
So... before you reach for that sledgehammer, call me. Then let's start creating your dream!
